I certainly understand the time investment; if should pay off for you. VFP is still a great tool, and will still do the job for you.

Well, that's a pretty tough conclusion to reach...based on the fact that these folks have invested a lot of their time into the community. Do you know them personally?

It is not a contest (you don't apply for it, or enter it like you would a contest)...it is only a recognition of what people have done in the past. But yes, it is done annually, but I think there have been some exceptions to this.

Let me ask you this...if you were a VFP MVP, and you believed .NET was the best path for you (and therefore possibly for a larger group of VFP developers), wouldn't it be proper to become a leader in .NET?

We'll have to agree to disagree on this...it is all a matter of perspective.
