I too had a taste of deterrent military service - with the USN in Polaris/Poseidon submarines. With somewhere around 30 operational at any given time, each carrying 16 missiles with each of those carrying up to 14 MIRV warheads - the numbers just boggle the mind. I see today we can get by with just 10, carrying the Trident II. I don't know how many warheads they carry, but can only guess they are just as lethal. As a kid, I didn't think a bit about the consequences of using them - if the order came down, I would have followed it. I believed that if tasked, we had already been attacked and we were retaliating. Today - I don't know - it terrifies me to think of them being used. I would want to be at GZ if it happened.
