The quickest way to select the separator is to select it in the properties sheet so that its anchor point is highlighted in the screen.

>Seperators are tricky devils. Once you insert them, finding them in order to move them around is a bear. The trick is they are aligned with the tops of the buttons. Try clicking on that top edge between the buttons and see if you can get a handle on the separator. Then you can drag it to the line between two buttons and it will pop in place. Once you get the hang of it it isn't too bad, but I have shared your frustration.
