Tracy;

Here is a link about part of the states power problems and what is being done.

http://www.dfehmp.ca.gov/News/energy.pdf

Governor Davis spoke out against President Bush's indifference to our energy problems. Contrary to the beliefs of others, California has built and is building power generators. It is a complex and multifaceted issue. A number of factors point to illegal pricing and Governor Davis stated this very clearly. In fact California is being reimbursed billions of dollars in over charges thanks to the Governors actions.

I could write a small book about October 17, 1989, our earthquake, destruction, indifference and the media.

Pete Wilson (television news person – not the governor!) screaming, “San Francisco is on fire”! Pictures of one home at the Mariana on fire and off its foundation. In all 12 homes in San Francisco were destroyed – all at the Mariana, which is landfill and unstable.

Gourmet cuisine being served to the “refugees” by the Red Cross. My brother Bill and I listened to the Red Cross Amateur Radio personal who helped on the 2 Meter band. We belonged to the Red Cross group but quit some time ago due to the type of actions we saw. The “refugees” actually picked what type of pasta they wanted! There were about 4 dozen persons served. The small eye of the television camera focused on what was important! One house on fire and others off their foundations in one small area.

Our relatives around the world thought San Francisco had been leveled! That is the power of the media! Our telephone allowed incoming calls but no out going! Figure that!

Behind the scenes were events like you described happened to you. In addition, Santa Cruz lost over 500 buildings in the down town area alone – which did not make the news! Watsonville had hundreds of homes and buildings destroyed and no drinking water. A husband and wife team who owned a local gym got the news out that Watsonville needed help so we pitched in! We delivered bottled water and food among other items. Watsonville was too unimportant to make the news and the Red Cross did nothing to help! The stories go on and on.

Nearly 14 years later the Cyprus Freeway in Oakland is still not completed! We are still waiting for “The Big One”!

>I hate to think of myself as being callous, but I am afraid that I fall into the same category as this person:

>when it comes to views on California's power outages. Lucky for me I don't live there, but then I didn't receive any help when I did live there. I was there for the 89 quake. I was in Monterrey, CA and I spent three days without power or even water following that one. I spent the entire time out in the city helping illegal immigrants get food, clothing, and water because they had nothing after the quake. No one brought me any supplies when I lost power for 3 days following Hurricane Fran. I didn't ask for help either though and I didn't need it to be frank. Losing power is certainly uncomfortable but not dangerous unless you have a health condition or there is a security threat. I'm afraid I am callous now...

>>Perhaps I am becoming callous (which I am), but I really do not care! California has its own energy problems and no one outside the state cared or cares. Let everyone enjoy power outages for whatever reason. Perhaps a power outage would help wake up our nations capitol! No, that would be asking too much - that is our nations capitol waking up! :)
