Selecting (or not selecting) different kinds of buffering you control how your users will work with the same records at the same time, i.e. you can allow/disallow to edit the same record simultaneously, you can control who (from let say two users) will actually save the record, etc. This topic is big enough and Chapter 19 from Developer's guide would be really helpful for you.
