If you are connecting via a high speed connection or have a lan you might want to consider getting firewall/router hardware. It takes the load of your computer and can be used to protect a lot of machines.
For dial-up ZoneAlarm is pretty good. I used to use it about a year ago. I have had a couple of issues with configuration for games but other than that it has worked well enough.
