>>can anyone tell me if they have had good/bad/indifferent experiences with any particular firewalls programs? am looking for a good software firewall and have seen a few out there but can't really tell the difference between different makes and some being free are quite appealing.

>If you are connecting via a high speed connection or have a lan you might want to consider getting firewall/router hardware. It takes the load of your computer and can be used to protect a lot of machines.

I agree with all those who suggested Hardware. Even if you only have one computer hooked to DSL or Cable, later on if you ever decided to add one you would already be set up. We have a linksys and it works really well, as they stated, takes load off computer, and software firewalls can really take resources, and best of all, they are fairly cheap. You can usually find good sales or rebates on them as of lately also.
