Jim, I stand to be corrected but I think HP actually did try to force only HP cartridges to work on HP printers by embedding a smartchip into the cartridge or some such technique. I think there is a legal battle going on in the EU about it - or perhaps HP have dropped it already - not sure. But HP would like to do this for obvious reasons. Personally I dont see the problem with it. If you are told this upfront you can choose to buy their printer or not. No one forces us to buy an HP printer.
