We do it also. In fact, we have added records to the p_codes table to include the escape codes for commonly used printers of our customers. We are moving away from it though due to the influx of GDI printers to prevent having to maintain two versions of the same report.

My class for text-reports has printer codes for a single type of printer, namely, Epson dot-matrix printers (fortunately, the codes are quite similar between the different models).
