How can I get my website listed on the popular search engines?

I have registered with 1 search engine submission site over 2 months. They advertise that they will submit your site with all the popular engines, but I still can't find any listing for our website anywhere.

What is the process to getting our site listed? Is there a recommended service that will list our site so that we see results?

Any ideas?
