London is not St. Louis - the market is different there, as is the HR procedures.
Would suggest the obvious -
send out your emails with a missive that you are looking for internship and
ask each developer to forward your info to BOTH the boss and the HR people.
It's a numbers game - with a low percentage of return - but - if you do not do it - then you will never even hit the low percentage of return.
I know its always so emotionally damaging to receive a "NEGATIVE" response - but - if you don't ask or try, then you would have achieved nothing - which is kinda where you are right now in the first place.
Be brave - take the steps you need to do - should be able to complete it all within a 24 hour period - and come on - that surely beats the h3ll out of watching Eastenders reruns on BBC channel 4.
