A lot of things can be done with API, start backup/restore operations, database validation and maintenance, set database properties, users maintenance, etc.

I've tested MySQL. It is fast but lacks standard SQL features like stored procedures, triggers, views.
PostgreSQL didn't had a native windows version at that moment (has now?)
I choosed Firebird and I have no regrets, yet :-)
