If your development costs are limited, and you'll be accessing data remotely, I suggest that you keep it in VFP at first, taking care of isolating the data access layer to be able to migrate easily later on.

Why? Because no matter if Firebird is free (and even counting on Dorin invaluable help) it would take you some time to master it. If you already know VFP, then you'll speed things up.

I think you'll be quite busy with other challenges to try to start using a new DB, too.
