Well actually the UK is possibly in a slightly worse position. The reason being that emergency powers acquired by the Government in WW2 have never been reversed, so in theory they can invoke any of these emergency measures at any moment. But then, that's what being in the EC was like anyway. Being told what to do by a bunch of French and Germans was not a nice thing.
