>Another misuse of a word is "lite". I was looking at my son's homework one night (not nite), and he had used the word "lite" in a sentence, when refering to a star. I told him the word was spelled "light". But he told me that his teacher said that "lite" was exceptable. I shock my head and said "We will see". The next day (or so), I say the same paper, and in fact the word was not marked wrong. I thought; What are they teach this generation. Are we becoming that lazy.

This is plain wrong. Light and lite are becoming two words. "Light" is a visual characteristic, as in "turn on the lights", while "lite" is a marketing ploy to sell "thinner" as "beter", as in "European Budweiser is light, American is lite".

I.e. using "lite" for a star is completely wrong. To comfort you, I know a story from back home, where the teachers were always much more adhering to grammar: a kid writes her homework, and gives it to parents to check. They find that there's only one word written wrong: "helihopter". They tell the kid so, and the kid say "I know it's wrong, but I must write it this way, because the teacher writes so and red-marks anyone who writes helikopter".
