I was using that combination three years ago, for some testing, because IDSMail had some problems with what we were trying to do. It worked, but had the same problem - namely, our user wanted to have their automated emails going through our SMTP server, which required us to allow relaying. Back then (year 2001) spam was already a problem, maybe not so big, but we got a warning from our ISP about it. For security reasons, as well, we turned relaying off, and the whole thing stopped working in both IDSMail and wwipstuff.

We also tried to send the mails through user's server, using an username different from current user. They've set a special account, named the same as our application suite, and we tried sending mails signed by that fictive user. Didn't work - something somewhere stopped those mails, while automated mails under the current user went fine. And there was no ISP involved here, the user was running their own SMTP.
