One must observe that for every "large" company there are over 1000 "small" companies.

And for every "Gucci" there are 1000 smaller shops and designers, many of whom are millionaires.

Not everybody can be, or wants to be, a Gucci. And there are still very good livings to be had.

Of course, for those who get to "invent" customers rather than actually earning a living from them, it is much sexier to pick a pretend big company to serve so you can act important. But at least one person here states that she has "thousands" of mom-and-pop customers. Do the math- if she can get a few hundred bucks out of each of them per year, she's earning more than you will until you become a partner- that is assuming that you've had time to attend law school while you were doing all this cool commercial dotNET work with those huge customers. So lets not scoff.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
