Let's say the customer does not have a lot of computer experience and might not have an IT department. Do you ask the user to use the backup capability build into SQL Enterprise Manager? Do you write your own backup system (Exprot to XML)? How about DMO or WMI?

I would recommend that your db installation create a maintenance plan on their server that backs up the database as need... then you could tell them to tape backup the backup folder.
