Tim, I am not sure what forces you to bring all the records through SQL, because the main idea of C/S - to bring only small record set, or even just one record (say, for updating single inventory entry). If you have set right indexes on your back end tables and created the right views, taking advantage of your indexes, retrieving of records usually is a matter of seconds.
