It's funny you should bring up web browser interfaces. Just last Wed. I was paid to review just such a solution for a Public warehouse client. I hated the interface and loved the backend. I believe the love affair with web browser frontends is fast coming to an end. But I agree Mono type programs are almost dead. So that leaves .NET remoting and Java (Java Web Start) with rich user interfaces and complete access via tcp/ip. Take note I'm not calling it a web-portal. Java J2EE servers do exactly what your suggesting - although, J2EE is not required for the thin client java solution. Users still want that rich interface with MDI just with more remote computing awareness and sharing of data.

in Java, you could do GUI interfaces - but it is faling in the enterpise the same as VFP/VB/C++/C# GUI interfaces. The thin client, web-portal based development is a predominant approach to get to the enterprise development. And you could do it with VFP as good as with Java or C# - and nobody will tell the difference, and nobody would care what tools were used on a backend; you could even mix and match them in the same project. The main thing - do not create any monolitic gigantic components, which VFP and VB developers used to create in the past.
