Hey I get to answer at last.......I have the same exact need in one of my crystal Reports. Here how I solved it:

I created a Parameter named 'Detail'
Type = boolean
Defaults are 'False' and 'True'

Then in the report record selection area:

TOTEXT({type_work.detail}) = TOTEXT({?Detail})

It seems to work very well. You could of course forego the need for the parameter field.....
