Hi Colin,
My guess is that you are not alone. But can you tell us a little more about the hardware where you do this?... for instance, is it (basically) dedicated to storing database tables or is it a 'whatever gets there gets there' situation?... Is there RAID in action?... with SEVERAL stripped volumes?
I view that your technique is just fine when it involves dedicated HD(s) and/or RAID with striping across more than 2 drives. But I would counsel caution in other situations.
