Sounds like the machine has something processing in the background. Check your system tray and turn everything off - make sure nothing 'extra' is running - and retry VFP8. It's not VFP8. That doesn't mean it will be easy isolating what it is... And when you do find it perhaps it's something you really, really want to keep...
