I'm not getting any errors, and Cecil had a corrupt file...his problem is solved :)
Yes, APPEND BLANK would cough if the default value is looking for an application object that doesn't exist. I would expect INSERT INTO to have the same problem in that situation.

I rarely (well really never) write default values into a DBF structure. But I did notice that those DBFs, where modify structure reveals a field that has an application method or function in the "default value" box, will "crash" when an APPEND BLANK is issued and the container for the default value method is not instanciated.
