Your workaround suggestion does work for me. This is what I did step by step:

Double click on Detail Band 2 (Or right click and select properties) to bring up the Detail Band Properties dialog.

In the text box marked 'Target alias expression:' place the following expression:

alias()

This solves the problem. Any field overflow then correctly overflows to the next page.

The same can be done for Detail Band 3 and any additional detail bands.
