Sorry Barbara, didn't mean to be abrupt. I tried setting notify off, but it hasn't had any effect. The "PROCEDURE CANCELLED" message is still appearing. I've traced the problem to the CANCEL command I've issued in my shutdown procedure, and have tried replacing cancel with RETURN TO MASTER, but to no avail ... a very frustrating problem indeed ... Thanks again for the feedback.
