I think it does not matter much which of the databases you use today. Each have some issues that will require you to do something in your code. I have a client using postgres and I stored most of the SQL code in SP's (works perfectly - have had no corruption in well over a year). But I could have easily used MySQL, MSSQL or something else. I used postgres because it was free and the client was using Linux servers.
