Steve - way back when , I took a class in 'database' that used the book 'An Introduction to Database Systems' by CJ Date. It is NOT a T-SQL book, nor is it what you are asking for. HOWEVER - IMO, if you read this book cover to cover, you can sit in on ANY database system and write code, after wrapping your head around any particular syntactical differences between ansi sql and 'the thing [in this case, T-SQL].
Recently, when I teach databases in college, I use the same book, albeit a later edition, and do examples with VFP, postgreSql and mySql.
When I first learned MS-SQL I relied solely on the BOL , then got more into DTS from examples from the 4guysfromRolla web site.
I personally cannot recommend any T-SQL book, for I have not read one specific to T-SQL other than the MicroSoft Press books for exams 70-028 and 70-029.
In my real world sql work - i make / code up test beds for ms-sql systems [among other things] and i've never cracked a specific t-sql book ...
You should have access to some version of the MS BOL somewhere, yes ?
hth - warmest regards [Bill]
