Hi Al,

I have the book. I haven't read it completely yet, but I have perused several chapters. As others have said, this book is definitely geared towards those that want to create their own framework, rather than use a commercial one. The pros and cons of doing so are addressed in the book. The source code provided should be considered an example or good starting place for creating your own framework, and while the code may work out of the box (or book), the whole point of the book is to customize a framework according to your needs, so you can't really compare it to a commercial product.

From what I've seen, MyFrame does make full use of new VFP8 features. For example, business objects are based on Data Environment classes that contain CursorAdapters, and they can be used independently or associated with a form. Kinda cool. N-Tier and OOP were considered from the start and baked right in.

As a commercial framework user, I know I wouldn't want to create all of those features from scratch. On the other hand, there is a certain freedom that comes with your own framework. You can make enhancements and changes without worrying about what's coming in the next upgrade, but that means you have to write the code. MyFrame would be a good start. Of course, any of the commercial frameworks would be as well.

>I've been asked to make a fixed-price bid for a small job. One of the job specs is that it will use the "MyFrame" framework, created by Ken Chazotte as implemented in his book: http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/buildfox.htm

>IMO one important thing about using a framework is being able to get support, bug fixes, etc. The client is in the process of migrating Arago (dBASE IV - DOS compatible) apps to VFP and I don't know how much experience they have with either VFP in general or this framework in particular. Ken Chazotte appears to have Congressional aspirations ( http://kenforcongress.com/ ) although as a Libertarian, he may want to keep his day job ;-) Regardless of how the election goes, his priorities seem mixed.
