But my beef is that we should be able to use locate for recno() = m.r1 like we would with a Grid and get the cursor on the required record. It would seem infinitely easier to operate a list box if we had this feature.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to do here. You say that the data used to populate your combo's List is filtered. How is it filtered? What does the filter depend on? You might want to consider using a parameterized view as the RowSource or a RowSourceType of 3-SQL statement so that you can Requery the combo appropriately when the filter condition changes.

Now, it also sounds like you are trying to set a default value for the combo box when conditions change. If this is so, there are plenty of ways that you can do this. Setting the value of the combo to some known value in its internal list, for example. Or setting the combo's ListIndex to 1.
