Never heard of Ladino - Romansh yes (as in Benelux?). How did that evolve in Israel?
----
It didn't.
Terry, Ladino is the patois of Sephardic Jews, as Yiddish is the patois of Ashkenazic Jews.
And to answer your other question, no Yiddish is not German with a funny accent. It is an amalgam of German, Eastern European languages, with some Hebrew and Aramaic, developed by Jews in that area of the world (=Ashkenazim).
So Jews from the Mediterranean area and North Africa (=Sephardim) don't speak Yiddish. They developed a different amalgam, OK? Has quite a bit of Spanish in it.
