Fraid I see things differently. I think they had good intentions, but it is wrong. I do not agree with jursidiction of Belgium national law allowing Belgium to prosecute war crimes against any country that does not abide the geneva conventions - that is not the same thing as the ICC and international law. They can have it in their books all they want but I will never agree to their jurisdiction. In fact the article specifically mentions that many analysts feel the ICC makes Belgium's law no longer relevant. I'm afraid that an international war crimes court based on national authority and not international authority is wrong in my opinion also. If it were the U.S. wanting to do this I'm sure the world would attack us for our arrogance (as they already do). I agree with the letter the U.S. Chamber of Commerce constructed to the Parliament of Belgium. U.S. citizens could find themselves at risk of criminal prosecution in the courts of Belgium for alleged corporate complicity in crimes against humanity anywhere in the world. Corporations cannot be expected to be capable of making judements on sovereign governments in every business venture but only on commercial prospects. Most businesses do not have an international affairs department that can determine whether or not the country meets Belgium's standards of conduct and hence could not conduct business outside of their host country. Investments in developing countries would virtually halt. I still believe it should take an international tribunal to prosecute war crimes.

>http://www.indictsharon.net/warcrimes-20030624lki.shtml. I do some work in Belgium and there was substantial anger at us and their politicians over this. Although the Sharon case got alot of the attention, there were several other state sponsored serial killers that also obtained the benefits of this decision. As one of Kerry's ex war criminals, I see value in commanding officers and politicians fearing being in the dock in front of an unbiased war crimes tribrunal. Helps temper the extremes of combat.
