You can use ??? to directly control a printer. I developed a whole system that printed forms and filled in the spaces at the same time. It's a bit of a pain to get the form coded but once it's done it works great.

Of course using ??? ties you to one particular printer language. I used PCL4 so it'd work with the HP LJIII and beyond.
