I'm sure you're right. People don't go off the reservation with stuff like this.
But they do sometimes tell a story that is almost true because they want somebody somewhere to think that some part that is in the story is true which actually isn't. There's a whole department that specializes in put just that kind of thing together.
Of course, the intended consumers of this also know how the game is played. So sometimes you're just messing with their heads and sometimes you just want them to think you're messing with them or you want them to think you think they think you are ...
