>>>Marshall Tito of Yugoslavia held his country together and defied outside influences. When he was no longer in power a struggle for power began and is not yet over. When Yasser Arafat is no longer in a position of power, Palestine could meet a similar fate. Fighting amongst factions within Palestine could last for years. This would only add to the complexity of peace in the area.

>>Maybe if he had been a true leader, he could have left an organization in place that would be a legacy to his life. Instead, he chose to consistently reneg on agreements, never really put the screws to Hamas and condemn and try to stifle terrorist activities, ad nauseum.

>Very true! I have often thought that Arafat was in a delicate position. If he were interested in retaining his position of leadership he would have to walk a tight rope. Trying to please so many different radical factions is not an easy task. To some Palestinians he is a hero and others see him as too lenient. But then again what do we know about such minds except from their actions?

You also brought up Tito which poses a question (similar to that of Arafat). If that area (Yugoslavia) was so stable under his rule yet so unstable as to not even survive his death, was Tito an incredibly competent leader or were his tactics questionable?
