Hi,

I too had to learn java so I picked up the book

"Java how to program 6/e" from Deitel"
isbn 0-13-148398-6

It is totally awesome. It's a college book (live code learning so if you do the examples you will learn how to program in Java...

The book is for a rank beginner and will take you very far..

You will need the following free Software

IDE - Eclipse 3.10 in beta know (it uses the java se 5.0 SDK)
Database - mySQL
ORM - Hibernate Object / Relation mapping (Java/SQL Database mapping

and other stuff that you will be exposed to as part of the book /course

There is a lot to learn but the book really helps start you
