That is easy to explain! We learned the English system of measurement from the British and are reluctant to change. Congress passed a bill in 1865 to allow us to go Metric. It sometimes takes us awhile to forge ahead and do the right thing. :)

P.S. In my previous life as an electronics engineer I was a Metrologist. We used metric and English systems of measurement - metric being of more importance.
