>>>You're career is based on tools invented by those you claim are close to the devil:) What will the barker say when he learns of this!! You'll start using Roman Numerals: Let's see : VII + II = IX - great palce to start a "New American Centuray".

>That is easy to explain! We learned the English system of measurement from the British and are reluctant to change. Congress passed a bill in 1865 to allow us to go Metric. It sometimes takes us awhile to forge ahead and do the right thing. :)

Yeah, I knew that, Tom (as well as the fact your pints, miles etc are all slightly different from ours). I didn't think you got your "Imperial" measurements off the French! :-)

It took us till c. 1971 to change a decimal currency, from Pounds, shillings and pence (FYI the symbols were: £ s d - standing for the Roman "lire" "sisterces" and "dinari" - so ours hadn't changed since before the Dark Ages!). There were 12d in 1s, and 20s in £1

It's strange to see the cubic capacity of a Harley D stamped on the engine in cubic inches!

>P.S. In my previous life as an electronics engineer I was a Metrologist. We used metric and English systems of measurement - metric being of more importance.

Trouble is - you sometimes use BOTH on the same space project - with disastrous results

To a certain extent we do too. Winter we know it's cold if it's 0 C (haven't got a clue what cold is in F) and it's weird to hear you guys say "Brrr! it must be 25 degrees out there!". Yet in Summer we know it's pretty hot if it's 80F, and refer to the heat in F as well as C.

But, if you're measuring a length of wood, what's the point in using feet and inches? It's so many units, minus so many units to cut off, etc.
