You got it - that's definitely the issue. PARTY is character and DATA is a Memo. About 2 years ago, DATA was changed from a character field to a memo field. In all versions prior to 9.0 release (including 9.0 Beta), an index of Party+Data can be created at any time and did not crash. As soon as you do anything to that table in 9.0 release it crashes.
