This problem spans previous versions of VFP, not just VFP9.
We have an ODBC connection to a PeopleSoft SQL Server that is used to update checks and invoices from another SQL Server.
Using SPT. no problem - lightning fast. However, when we attempt to use the view designer and join six PeopleSoft tables, it basically bombs. First of all, a PeopleSoft database has gazillions of tables and it took forever for the view designer to load the picklist of tables. Then I tried copying the SQL into a new remote view and it errored out on the save claiming it could not resolve a field name. Finally, after some fiddling, I got the RV it to work, but the query took minutes to run as opposed to using SPT which took about a second.
It seems like the view designer has a problem with remote servers which have a lot of tables. Maybe this is a known issue, but I have never read it anywhere.
