There was a NYPD Blues early on, when it was halfway decent, when the burly usually jerk of a cop was working on a case where a mentally ill man was a witness. The cop very sweetly gave the man clear instructions on how to make a protective hat out of tinfoil. It was a rare glimpse at the character's softer side. <s>
