Being behind the 8-ball is a very bad thing because it normally means you have no decent shot available.

Speaking of (un)common phrases, "playing pocket billiard" has a special meaning in Yugoslav languages (well, slang)... amounts to one playing with the balls while keeping a hand in the pocket of his trousers :).
