>I know nothing about Visual Source Safe, but gather from your mentioning SccText.prg that VFP does all of the work shaping the files into something VSS can use - Do I need to let Foxpro manage Visual Source Safe to have the conversion take place automatically/seamlessly? If this is true, then it looks like I can't just invoke a file comparison in VSS, I would need to first set up the Fox Project and then could use the VSS comparator? I'm gathering that VSS isn't aware of the type of project it's dealing with.

That would be correct, you have to have the VFP IDE do the checking in/out for the conversion from/to a .VCX etc., otherwise, you're storing a binary file where no comparison would be available (that I know of) within VSS. You can also run SCCTEXT manually to create the files. Have a look at the .PRG to see what it expects for parameters.

I've used VSS on many projects (though not currently) and it is quite handy for doing just such comparisons. Be aware that the SCCTEXT.PRG as supplied with VFP has a problem with writing out the methods in seemingly random fashion, so the text files are different. There are quite few sites that have a modified SCCTEXT.PRG that correct this problem. Here's one place that I found (http://mmfudg.org/tips_etc.htm)

There may be a tool in the downloads here that will do the to/from text files so other comparison tools can be used if you don't want to have everything checked into VSS.
