If that does not work I would try cutting and pasting into a new document and then recreate the TOC. Another option would be to break up your document into smalled digestable pieces. I know Word in the past had lots of problems with large size files.

thanks for the info. wound up using cut -n- paste. trying to reformat to match standards now, but worth the effort.
