Who cares if Visual FoxPro lives or dies, in the grand scheme of things?
I posted this opinion a while back, but it appear that it should be reiterated. In short, I am not a Visual FoxPro programmer. I am not a Microsoft products programmer. I am a database programmer with a focus on object-oriented design and programming. If a particular product comes or goes makes no difference to me - I will continue to make money and be successful. Are you really that afraid that the possible demise of VFP will jeopardize your career?
>I can't tell you how often good ol IBM tried similar "dreams" in the mainframe world over the years, each time never realizing its goal. OS/2 in PCs is only thier latest attempt. Things like this sound so good, and look so good on paper, but have real problems when trying to actually move along the path. We would all be far better off is MS would just give up on this screwy idea and get back to writing full, complete, comprehensive, working well-documented products.
Don't knock IBM so quickly. They are still a force to be reckoned with in their market. Their primary error, as I see it, was in attempting to market OS/2 in the home market. OS/2 is still viable - I used it for some time myself and like it, and in the right environment, it is a correct solution.
IBM is also marketing one of the more-oft used Smalltalk packages, which I have a current interest in.
