Jordan,

IMHO the type of app and industry makes a big difference. Consultants who churn out data entry forms and simple search facilities will have a different perspective from big iron developers whose fat client apps use SPs they do not own/control. Those who display data across the internet will have a different perspective again.

This is one of the big troubles with IT- new products come with breathless support from the manufacturer and the self-appointed gurus, but little else. Contrast this with a new medical treatment that is accompanied by millions of dollars worth of previous trials, clearly defined appropriate uses and contraindications and a wealth of reproducable evidence to support its use.

This is a real problem for the perception of developers as professionals. Advice to customers is inevitably based on anecdote and vendor marketing because that is all there is until enough developers have experimented on customers and the facts start to come in.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
