Nah... you can pretty much keep your British accent - it would bring you a few positive points here. The trouble is that you need to completely re-train your ears. The more south you go, the fewer consonants are pronounced, specially around the last syllable. And those that are pronounced get softened and melt somehow into each other... often I hear "tode" when they said "tote"... so it's not that you need to learn speaking, but rather to ler howa lisn...
