That is an odd one. Not that I have the answer, in fact I'm still on Office 2002, but does it happen in all of the different layouts Word has under the view menu?
If you have text before and after the graphic, does the text before and after it merge together, or does it show a blank area between the text? If they merge, I don't think the graphic card or driver is the problem.
And, if you want the start bar items to be listed seperatly, right click on the taskbar and select Properties. Under the taskbar tab, uncheck "Group similar taskbar buttons."
