>If the manufacturers would provide stickers for the cars with a mpg rating then it could work. People might actually purchase more efficient vehicles. Of course, they could just start stealing stickers... :o) It would have to be something permanent. When you purchases a vehcile it is rated for its efficiency on the sticker.

While that may effect a buying decision, it bears no resemblance to reality. < s > Too much depends on maintenance, driving style, road conditions, etc.. I can always get better mileage than my wife, in fact, I may drive faster/harder, though our styles are radically different.

Won't work, as you said, they'd just steal stickers. And how would you deal with my scenarios of an 8 that gets better than a 4?

>>How do you determine that?

>>I have an 8 cyl car that gets over 34 MPG highway EPA rated 27). I had a 4 cyl car that the best it ever did was like 28 (EPA rated 30). I currently also have a 4 cyl car that gets 35-39 (EPA rated 40).

>>Too arbitrary, I'm afraid.

>>>How about pumps with lower prices for 4 cyl vehicles and hybrids with mpg above 30? :o) An actual benefit for buying a more fuel efficient vehicle...

At the same time, as long as they are willing to pay more at pump, not much could be done about it. To give you fuller picture I have even stronger dislike to those driving SUVs and preaching moderation and environment protection to others.
