>>Right you are. And FWIW I hated that movie - Tom Cruise was so smarmy and smug. If you compare his character with young Fast Eddie in "The Huster" (and the overall tone of the two movies) the difference is really pronounced (though in fairness I watched The Color of Money recently and didn't hate it as much - maybe this time I let Mary Elizabeth Mastroantonnio get to me ;-)

>If you're going to worry about comparing Cruise's work in 'Color' with Newman's in 'Hustler', or even try to compare the movies themselves, you are going to grow into a very frustrated old man. ;)

>Seriously, everything about 'The Hustler' was great. George C. Scott.. well, it's hard to believe anybody could be that good. Didn't you just hate him? A lot like his role in 'Anatomy of a Murder'. He was so good in that, that I wanted to put my foot through the tv when I first saw it many many moons ago.

"This isn't football, Eddie. You don't get points for yardage. When you hustle pool you keep score real simple - at the end of the game you count your money - that's how you find out who's best"

Yeah, The Hustler was something very special. I think it was the first movie I ever saw at the theater more than once ( the next was McCabe and Mrs Miller and then The Duellists )

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
